Southern Serengeti Calving Season and Ngorongoro, 4 days
The Great Migration at its most intimate, timed around the calving season on the Ndutu plains.
Experience one of Tanzania's most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on a carefully designed four-day private safari combining the Great Migration calving season in the Southern Serengeti with the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater. During the calving season, the vast herds of wildebeest and zebra gather across the short-grass plains around Ndutu, where thousands of calves are born. The abundance of newborn animals also attracts predators, creating exceptional opportunities to witness lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators in action. The open plains provide excellent visibility for both wildlife viewing and photography. The itinerary is intentionally designed around time in the Ndutu ecosystem rather than rushing through several destinations. Guests arrive in Arusha, travel directly toward the Southern Serengeti with an en-route game drive, spend two nights around Ndutu, enjoy a sunrise balloon safari over the migration plains, and then continue to the Ngorongoro Crater for a full crater experience. This is also an excellent safari extension for guests climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, allowing them to finish their mountain adventure and continue directly into one of Tanzania's most spectacular wildlife experiences.
December to March. December sees the herds concentrate in the Southern Serengeti as calving activity begins, February is often the strongest period with very high concentrations of newborn wildebeest and predator activity, and in March calving continues while the herds begin preparing to move north. The exact location and timing of the herds are influenced by rainfall and grazing conditions, so sightings can never be guaranteed on specific dates.
It is designed for it. December to March is a good climb window, and after the mountain and a recovery day in Arusha the safari follows naturally: mountain, wilderness, wildlife, and then Zanzibar or your international departure.
It is available as an additional experience, subject to availability and weather, and is only included when specifically quoted. The morning after the flight is deliberately left unhurried rather than filled with another long transfer.
They are two different experiences. Ndutu is the migration, newborn life and predator action across open plains. Ngorongoro is a remarkably concentrated resident ecosystem inside a dramatic volcanic landscape.

4 days, in order
Arusha to the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu
An en-route game drive rather than a transfer, then an evening drive across the Ndutu plains.
After breakfast in Arusha, depart with your private safari guide and begin the journey toward the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu.nnThe journey takes you through the changing landscapes of northern Tanzania, gradually moving from the highlands toward the open plains of the Serengeti ecosystem. As you approach Ndutu, the safari begins.nnRather than treating the journey as a simple transfer, we make it part of the safari experience. Once entering the wildlife areas, your guide begins an en-route game drive, looking for wildlife along the way. Depending on the season and wildlife movements, you may encounter wildebeest and zebra herds, giraffe, Grant's and Thomson's gazelles, elephants, ostrich, antelope, lions, hyenas, cheetahs and a variety of resident and migratory bird species.nnAs you reach the Ndutu plains, the landscape changes dramatically into vast open grasslands dotted with seasonal lakes and acacia woodland.nnAfter checking into your camp or lodge and enjoying some time to settle in, head out for an evening game drive across the Ndutu plains. This is a particularly atmospheric time of day, when the light becomes softer and wildlife activity often increases. During the calving season, the short grass gives excellent visibility across the plains, while predators patrol the edges of the enormous herds.nnReturn to camp as the sun sets.
Ndutu Calving Season
A sunrise balloon flight and bush breakfast, an unhurried late morning, then an extended afternoon predator drive.
Today is the highlight of the journey.nnRise before dawn and transfer to the balloon launch site. As the first light appears over the Southern Serengeti, take to the skies for a private or shared hot-air balloon safari over the Ndutu plains, subject to availability and weather conditions.nnFrom above, the scale of the migration becomes extraordinary. The vast herds appear as moving patterns across the green plains, while the changing morning light creates exceptional photographic opportunities. This is one of the most memorable ways to appreciate the landscape where the Great Migration's calving season takes place.nnAfter landing, enjoy the traditional bush breakfast before returning to camp.nnReturn to your lodge or mobile camp for a relaxed late morning. Enjoy breakfast, take time to rest, use the camp facilities or simply sit back and absorb the sounds and scenery of the Southern Serengeti. We deliberately leave this period unhurried.nnLater in the afternoon, head back onto the Ndutu plains for another extended game drive. This is the time to concentrate on the wildlife experience that makes calving season so extraordinary: newborn wildebeest calves, enormous herds, zebras, gazelles and the predators that follow them. The Southern Serengeti is particularly renowned during this period for predator activity, with lions, cheetahs and hyenas taking advantage of the abundance of vulnerable young animals.nnYour guide will remain flexible, following wildlife rather than simply following a fixed route. Return to camp after sunset.
Ndutu to Ngorongoro Crater
A descent of some 600 metres into the crater for a full day among its resident wildlife, then up to the rim for the night.
Enjoy breakfast before departing Ndutu and beginning the journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The morning drive provides another opportunity to enjoy the changing landscapes and wildlife of the conservation area.nnDescend approximately 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day game drive. The crater floor is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, gazelles, ostrich, flamingos and other waterbirds, and numerous resident bird species.nnThe crater provides a completely different wildlife experience from Ndutu. Ndutu is about the migration, newborn life and predator action across open plains. Ngorongoro is about a remarkably concentrated resident wildlife ecosystem inside a dramatic volcanic landscape.nnAfter your crater experience, ascend to the crater rim and continue to your lodge within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Spend the evening relaxing at the lodge and enjoying the highland atmosphere.
Ngorongoro to Kilimanjaro International Airport
A relaxed highland breakfast, then the drive east to the airport, timed around your flight.
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast overlooking the Ngorongoro highlands.nnAfter breakfast, meet your private driver-guide and begin the journey toward Kilimanjaro International Airport. Depending on your international flight schedule, we can arrange an appropriate departure time and, where practical, include a final stop or lunch along the way.nnArrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport in time for your flight home, bringing your Southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro adventure to an end.
