Why we operate from Kilimanjaro, not Arusha
Almost every Kilimanjaro operator is based in Arusha. We are not, and it changes the trip in small practical ways that add up.
The distances
Arusha sits about eighty kilometres west of Moshi. The Kilimanjaro gates are east and north of Moshi. That means an Arusha-based climb begins with a drive past us on the way to the mountain, and ends with the same drive in reverse.
- Moshi to Kilimanjaro International Airport: about forty-five minutes.
- Moshi to Machame Gate: about fifty minutes.
- Moshi to Marangu Gate: about an hour.
- Arusha to the same gates: add roughly ninety minutes each way.
What that buys you
A later start on day one, which means you reach the first camp in daylight with time to settle. A shorter descent day, which matters more than it sounds when you have been walking since midnight. And a crew who live where the climb starts rather than being bussed in.
It also means that if something is forgotten, broken, or the wrong size, someone can go and get it. The office is not four hours away from your kit check.
Ninety minutes each way, twice, is half a day of your holiday spent on the A23.
The crew live here
This is the part that matters most and is hardest to put in a comparison table. Our guides, cooks and porters are from Moshi and the villages on the mountain’s southern slopes. They go home between climbs. They are not casual labour hired by the trip from a pool in a different city.
That produces the thing we actually sell: the same lead guides year after year, who know each other, know the camps, and have a reason to care what happens on your climb.
The trade-off, honestly
Arusha is closer to the safari parks and has more flights, more hotels and more restaurants. If your trip is safari-only, Arusha is the logical base and we will route you through it.
For a climb, or for a climb and safari combined, the mountain end of the trip is where the early mornings are, and being close to it is worth more than being close to the parks.
Where you stay
Our included nights are in Moshi, at the foot of the mountain. It is a small town, walkable, with the mountain visible from most of it on a clear morning. It is not a resort and that is rather the point: you are there to climb, brief, eat and sleep.
