Where to see leopards in Tanzania
Leopards are shy and mostly active at night. The Seronera River valley in the central Serengeti is the best place in Tanzania to find one in daylight.
Central Serengeti
The Seronera River and its tributaries are lined with sausage trees and yellow-barked acacias, which leopards use to rest and store kills. Guides here know individual animals and their favourite trees.
Tarangire
Leopards live along the river and in the woodlands. Look up into large trees and baobabs.
Lake Manyara
The dense groundwater forest suits leopards, though visibility is limited.
Ruaha and Nyerere
Both southern parks hold good leopard numbers, and night drives are possible in some areas outside the national park boundaries.
Ngorongoro Crater
Leopards are seen occasionally, mostly on the forested crater rim and near the Lerai Forest.
Tips for finding one
- Look for a tail hanging from a branch.
- Scan kopjes and rocky outcrops.
- Watch for alarm calls from baboons, monkeys and impala.
- Be patient. Leopards often come down from a tree at dusk.
