Halal safari food in Tanzania
Halal meals on safari are possible with planning. The key is telling your operator early so each lodge can prepare.
Sourcing
Halal-certified meat is available in Arusha and Dar es Salaam. Lodges order it in advance for your stay.
At the lodge
Ask whether meat is prepared separately, and whether separate utensils and pans are used. Some lodges have staff familiar with halal requirements.
Packed meals
Packed breakfasts and lunches for game drives can also be halal, or vegetarian and seafood-based.
Local dishes
Many Tanzanian dishes are naturally halal, especially on the coast: pilau, biryani, coconut fish curry, chapati and beans.
Questions to ask
- Is the meat halal-certified?
- Is it prepared separately?
- Is alcohol used in any cooking?
- Are gelatine and other ingredients checked?
