Best Tanzania safari parks for first-time visitors
The four parks of the Northern Circuit are the best introduction to safari in Africa: varied, close together and full of wildlife.
Serengeti
The one to build the trip around. The Big Five, the Great Migration, and wide horizons. Spend at least two nights here, ideally three or four.
Ngorongoro Crater
A single day inside the crater can show lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena, hippo and, with luck, black rhino. The rim is cool and green. A good first or last stop.
Tarangire
Elephant herds and baobabs, best in the dry season. Close to Arusha, which makes it a good first day.
Lake Manyara
Small and scenic, with forest, lake shore and escarpment. Good on a shorter trip or as a half-day on the way to the crater.
Parks to save for a second trip
The southern parks (Nyerere, Ruaha) and western parks (Katavi, Mahale, Gombe) are remote, quieter and usually reached by air. They are excellent, but the Northern Circuit gives more variety for a first visit.
A typical first-time route
Arusha, Tarangire, Serengeti (2 to 4 nights), Ngorongoro, back to Arusha or fly to Zanzibar.
